Amber's Postpartum Unfiltered
My first few days of postpartum were spent at Warkworth birth care which, at the time, I thought was true HEAVEN ON EARTH. The hospital basically showers you, gives you a baby and says “byeeee, good luck!” So being able to spend a couple of days where nurses and midwives are around the clock to teach you literally everything, plus having three hearty meals a day cooked for you was true bliss and something I’ll forever be grateful for.
Our midwife, Melissa was incredible too and we always felt like we had a real friend in our corner. I had two miscarriages prior to this pregnancy so having someone who felt like family assisting us on this journey made the ride so much better. She loooved her “Badass baby catcher” candle!
Once we got home, we began to settle into our new life as four (dog child included) which basically consisted of walking, sleeping and eating and trying to figure out how to keep this thing alive. The Viva la vulva witch hazel spray became part of my daily routine as I slowly healed from my vaginal birth and second degree perineal tear. I also loved the ice packs and would use them each morning when I felt tender.
As anyone PP knows, food prep is the last thing on your mind no matter how hungry you are - you just don’t have the energy. If I could give one tip to anyone about to give birth it would be to load up the freezer with nutritious re-made meals that you can just heat up when you’re in the trenches.
We were so lucky to have such a kind support network who were extremely talented in the kitchen so we never had to think about what we were going to eat for about 2 weeks as we made our way through our pre-made frozen meals.
The worst thing about the postpartum days for me was the wondering when I’d ever get “Amber” back. The best part was finally accepting that “Amber” is everything she always was, but now she’s also a mother - which is the hardest/greatest/most terrifying adventure she’s been on yet..
🔥💗 Thank you so much, Amber - for sharing a piece of your postpartum journey with us. This is such a powerful step towards changing the narrative around our postpartum experiences. It's time to not only celebrate the victories but also empathise with the challenges!
