The Benefits of Heat Therapy vs. Cold Therapy for Breastfeeding Support

The Benefits of Heat Therapy vs. Cold Therapy for Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding can be an incredible bonding experience, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. At Viva La Vulva, we understand the importance of supporting mamas through their breastfeeding journey.
Our Breasties Hot/Cold Therapy Packs are designed to provide support when it's needed most. Let's dive into the benefits of heat therapy versus cold therapy for breastfeeding, and how you can use our Breasties to ensure let-down is encouraged and mastitis/engorgement is avoided.
Heat Therapy: Promoting Let-Down and Easing Discomfort
Heat therapy can be a lifesaver for breastfeeding mamas. Here’s how it helps:
  1. Encourages Let-Down - Applying warmth to your breasts before feeding time can help stimulate blood flow and encourage the let-down reflex. This makes it easier for your baby to feed and helps you avoid the frustration of delayed let-down.
  2. Relieves Engorgement
  3. Warmth can help soften your breasts and make it easier for your baby to latch, reducing the discomfort of engorgement.
  4. Eases Blocked Ducts - Heat is known to help to open up milk ducts and ensure milk flows freely. This is crucial in preventing blocked ducts, which can lead to mastitis if not addressed promptly.
  5. Soothes discomfort  - Warmth can be incredibly soothing for sore, tender breasts, providing much-needed relief after long days of feeding.
How to use Viva La Vulva Breasties for Heat Therapy:
Simply heat our Breasties packs in the microwave for the recommended time (in 20 second increments). Place the warm packs inside your bra, material side against your skin, hold them against your breasts for a few minutes before feeding or pumping. The gentle heat will help encourage milk flow and soothe any discomfort.
Cold Therapy: Reducing Inflammation and Relieving discomfort
Cold therapy is another powerful tool for breastfeeding support. Here’s how it helps:
  1. Reduces Inflammation - Applying cooling to your breasts can support swelling and inflammation, especially if you’re experiencing engorgement or mastitis (please always consult your lead maternity carer or healthcare professional if you believe you may have mastitis as medication may be required)
  2. Numbs Pain - Cold therapy can numb sore areas, providing quick pain relief. This is particularly useful for mamas dealing with the pain of cracked nipples or blocked ducts.
  3. Speeds Healing - Cold therapy can help the symptoms of mastitis by decreasing inflammation and support healing (please always consult your lead maternity carer or healthcare professional if you believe you may have mastitis as medication may be required)
How to Use Breasties for Cold Therapy
Place our Breasties packs in the freezer for a few hours until they’re cold, or fridge if you’d like them slightly cool. Then, place them inside your bra material side to skin or hold them against your breasts for 10-15 minutes at a time. The cool packs will help reduce inflammation and provide soothing relief.
Preventing Mastitis with Heat and Cold Therapy with these steps:
Mastitis is a painful condition that can develop if a blocked duct becomes infected. Using a combination of heat and cold therapy can help prevent mastitis:
  1. Start with heat - Use heat therapy before feeding to encourage let-down and ensure milk flows freely. This helps prevent milk from getting trapped in the ducts.
  2. Follow with cold - After feeding, use cold therapy to reduce any swelling or inflammation and to soothe your breasts. This can help prevent the ducts from becoming blocked.
By alternating between heat and cold therapy, you can maintain healthy milk flow, reduce discomfort, and keep mastitis at bay.
Remember, taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your baby. Embrace the benefits of heat and cold therapy, and enjoy a smoother, more comfortable breastfeeding experience with Viva La Vulva.
You’ve got this, mama!

    Amber's Postpartum Unfiltered

The worst thing about the postpartum days for me was the wondering when I’d ever get “Amber” back. The best part was finally accepting that “Amber” is everything she always was, but now she’s also a mother - which is the hardest/greatest/most terrifying adventure she’s been on yet..

I’d never heard of low supply until I went through it myself. It's crazy to think about now because as I’ve opened up about it, I’ve heard more stories of mamas in similar situations. It seems it is a really common problem that is hushed away.
